I just can't seem to kick
the habit. How can I get additional help?
Many smokers are unable to kick the habit on their
own, so the Lung Cancer Center at Beth Israel Cancer Center
instituted the STOP Nicotine Dependence Treatment Program.
(See below for additional programs.)
STOP offers a full range of services to tobacco users, which
includes consultation and assessment, treatment planning,
withdrawal symptom management, and counseling and relapse
prevention. The program bases treatment on theories of chemical
dependence and behavioral change, while addressing the physical,
behavioral, and emotional components of nicotine dependence.
Nicotine patches, inhalers, nasal sprays, gum, and other
medications are used to assist patients with withdrawal symptom
management, coping strategies, problem-solving, and complementary
techniques such as deep breathing, relaxation and imagery.
A support group is available free of charge and is open to
the community.
We also administer spiral CT scans to screen patients who
may be at risk for lung cancer based on the number of years
they have smoked and the number of cigarettes they smoke daily.
